Making Friends: Redefining “Hangouts”

Friendship isn’t just about coffee dates and weekend brunches. If you’re struggling to fit social time into your busy schedule, it’s time to rethink what a “hangout” can be. Here are some unconventional (but totally awesome) ways to stay connected.

1. Embrace the Power of Group Chats

Virtual friends absolutely count! I have a group chat with some amazing mamas—women I know in real life, but our schedules never align for in-person meetups. Some of my favorite conversations happen in that chat. We laugh, we vent, we offer support, and the best part? Everyone can catch up in their own time. It’s friendship on demand!

2. Turn Productivity Into Social Time

Why suffer through your to-do list alone? Make it a thing by tackling boring tasks together!

  • Purge your house
  • Clean out your car
  • Shampoo your rugs
  • Fold the laundry
  • Do yard work

These dreaded chores instantly become way more enjoyable with a friend. Some tasks you can do side by side, but even better—make it a weekly tradition! One week, you tackle your junk drawer. Next week, it’s their turn to fold laundry. It’s a win-win: quality time and a cleaner home.

3. Errand Dates

Need to hit Target, grab groceries, or make a return? Do it together! It’s low effort, productive, and still counts as quality time. Bonus: You’ll have someone to talk you out of impulse purchases (or enable them—depends on the friend).

4. “Dinner Swap” or Meal Prepping Together

Cooking for your family every night can be exhausting. Why not trade meals with a friend once a week? Cook a double batch of something easy and swap—one less dinner to worry about!

If you’re both free, you can even meal prep together and chat while chopping veggies, throw some meat prep on the grill or plan out your menu for the week.

The Bottom Line

Friendship doesn’t have to be another thing you struggle to fit into your already-packed life. Get creative, redefine what connection looks like, and make it work for you!
